
This day in 1959 the Soviet spacecraft Luna 2 slammed into the Moon, thus becoming the first spacecraft ever to reach it.
It’s predecessor Luna 1 had been intended to get the honor of being first but missed the Moon by over three thousand miles due to a malfunction in the ground-based control system. Luna 2 landed right on target in the Mare Serenitatis area of the Moon:

The success of Luna 2 was a huge propaganda bonus for the USSR and came just in time for a scheduled visit to the US by Nikita Krushchev, enabling him to make such comments during his trip like:
We have beaten you to the moon, but you have beaten us in sausage making.
