Check out this great public art piece by Candy Chang that she installed (with permission) on the side of a boarded up building in her New Orleans neighborhood.
The piece consists of several different chalk boards which are spray painted with rows of the same sentence: ‘Before I die I want to _____.’
The heart of the whole project comes from the interaction of the people around it…
Little baskets of chalk are provided for random people passing by to fill in their answers.
Some of the answers are what you would expect to see, like worries about dying before important milestones or wanting to take a trip to a particular country.
Others are a little more unexpected: ‘Be ok with NOT understanding.’ ‘Create a life and take one.’ ‘Sing for millions.’ ‘Not be second best.’ ‘Live thru you.’
Even this guy dressed up as a pirate (? must be Pastafarian) paused to write something. He wrote: ‘tried for piracey.’
(You can see more pictures of this project at the ‘Before I Die… in NOLA’ page.)
I love art that’s interactive and makes you stop what you’re doing and think differently for a while. This one makes you consider what specific thing you want to have in the story of your life that you haven’t achieved yet.
I was going to end this blog by saying how I would finish the ‘Before I die…’ sentence, but it’s turned out to be harder than I expected to think of that one definitive thing. I’m probably just being too picky but I’ll have to think on it a while longer.
Do you know what you’d fill in the blank if you were passing by the chalk board?

What I want before I die? for now I want to sleep:)
But after I’ll wake up I want to call to someone called Dragon and to say Good morning!
And then will go my way.
Simple wishes.
Sometimes we cannot do it. One another person now in mounters. And he risk his life. For such case is good service – http://dyingmessage.com/
Thanks for sharing Aya. Simple wishes yes but the simple stuff is the best part of life in my opinion :).
