After the partial nuclear meltdowns at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan a skeleton crew of fifty people were sent in to try and get things under control and prevent a nightmare scenario from happening.
They were named ‘Fukushima Fifty’ by the media and the name has stuck even though the number of people has gradually grown over time.
Now there are several hundred in the Fukushima Fifty but we still don’t know very much about them at all. This week was the first time any pictures from inside the plant have been released since they were sent in. There’s not even that many pictures but it at least gives us a small window into the environment they have to work in.
The pictures have a spooky sort of feeling, especially considering one of the most dangerous things facing the people there is seeping through the walls around them.
With the lights not yet working inside the plant the Fukushima Fifty resort to walking around with flashlights. They face the possibility of extreme sickness or even death due to radiation poisoning, for many of them this job will be their last.
Night and day they struggle to figure out how to cool and stabilize the reactors so that a nuclear meltdown doesn’t happen. (You can see the rest of the pictures at MailOnline.)
So far their efforts have been met with limited success but they keep trying, knowing that the safety of their families and countrymen are at stake.
