Put out a question on Facebook the other day: What’s your favorite book of all time? There’s been a wide variety of answers so far, books like The Giving Tree, Serial Killers, and Stranger In A Strange Land have been named.
The top pick as of this writing is Ender’s Game, which is my favorite book of all time too. I like the book so much that I don’t even know how many times I’ve read it at this point, all I know is that we’ve gone through a few copies of it here at my house over the years.
What is it about the book that I like so much? The story just blew me away the first time I read it and it continues to do so even years later. It’s a sci-fi book but there’s a depth and humanity to it that reminds me of ancient mythology.
It’s one of those books that you don’t know how to describe in a way that does justice to how good it is, you just want to press a copy of it into the hands of another person and say ‘read this’. And actually I have done that before lol.
These days what will probably be the very last in a long line of my worn copies of Ender’s Game sits on a bookshelf in the hallway. I have a digitized version of the book now on my phone which means that while my phone may wear out, the book never will.
