This mini-documentary tells the story of a family whose father became obsessed with accumulating Beanie Babies and how things snowballed until everyone became hostage to the Beanie Baby obsession.
Besides the topic itself being interesting (the whole Beanie Baby thing has been on my mind since The Beanie Baby Lady hint memoir) I think this documentary is compelling because it was made by a member of the family (one of the sons) so the storytelling and interviews have a level of intimacy not found in your average documentary.
Like this part where the mother describes when she realized that things had gone way too far, she isn’t just talking to the camera she’s talking to the son about an experience they both shared:
And when you kids all you would do all weekend long is inventory and write lists and put plastic things on the tags to protect them…and that’s how we spent our weekends. That’s when it was the turning point for me…
Check out this documentary, it’s only eight minutes long but is so fascinating for both it’s story and storytelling style.
