    Who
My name's Anita Wirawan and I love stories :).

I read/watch a lot of stories and like to share the most interesting and unusual ones here to see what everyone else thinks about them.

    Why
I had originally started this blog as a way to get things together after my brother Jody died back in 2008, but it's turned into a lot more than that.

I hope you'll find the stories that you need here.

    What Next
Feel free to look around the blog and add your own thoughts or stories, I'd love to hear 'em.

The Sleep Of Warriors (Hint Memoir)

A cartoon picture of a pink bunny with long ears on green grass.

The problem: Where would the bunny go?

She helped him to a crook in the tree… there he’d live, smiling over the sleep of warriors.

A Birthday Over Grass (Hint Memoir)

A picture of a pinwheel that was left at the grave of Jody Michael Wirawan of Anchorage, Alaska.

With pinwheel and striped roses over raised letter, she carefully laid the presents under the sun.

This was the first time, though not the last.

The Man Who Just Sat There And Stared At The Screen

I was listening to a talk by a Google employee a couple of years ago and he (she? I can’t really remember anymore) was telling a story about something very odd that happened during one of Google’s rounds of user testing.Black and white picture of a man looking at a laptop and looking confused.

Basically for this user testing they put people in a room by themselves and set them up in front of a computer connected to the internet. The idea was that the person was supposed to use Google in whatever way they wanted so that the Google employees could get a better understanding of how people use the site.

So they had set up this one man and then they went to the other room to observe what he did. He typed in www.google.com into the browser and sat there. And… pretty much just kept sitting there.

Time ticked by and he just sat there and sat there without typing anything into the search box or clicking a link. The Google employees were puzzled and thought maybe something was wrong.

They went back into the room and asked him if everything was all right and he said yes. At that point they were doubly puzzled because of his response so they basically said ‘Sooo, whatcha doing then?’ and he said:

‘Well, I’m waiting for the page to load.’

I’m guessing that most of us are familiar with the trademark simplicity of Google’s home page, but apparently this guy had never seen anything like it. He thought that there had to be more to the page than a logo and the search box so he was patiently waiting for the rest of the website to show up.

Just goes to show that you never really know how someone will react to something until you actually have them try it. In this man’s life experience web pages just weren’t that simple (he must have been using Yahoo a lot lol).

If no one had come back into the room who knows how long he would have sat there just waiting for the page to load, not to mention how he must have been thinking ‘This is the slowest loading page in history!’ the whole time.

Nomad Emergency (Hint Memoir)

A color drawing of a nomad house with a nomad standing in the doorway.

We wandered to the middle of nowhere and our food supply had slowly dwindled.

But out of what remained she made a legendary meal: nomad gumbo.

Is That Your Shillelagh Or Are You Just Happy To See Me?

Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone :)

A picture of the book cover for The St. Patrick's Day Shillelagh by Janet Nolan

Real book, real book cover. The St. Patrick’s Day Shillelagh is a children’s book about a hunk of wood called a shillelagh that was brought over from Ireland when a family had to migrate during the potato famine.

A couple of generations down the line a girl re-discovers the wood hunk in some attic or something and is encouraged to go to her grandfather to find out about it’s history. And as you can see from the illustration on the book cover, he is very very happy to see it again.

The Lost Ring (Hint Memoir)

A cartoon picture of a diamond ring with gold band like in a wedding ring.

In the shadow of the fake mountains she looked for the lost ring that never existed.

However, the guardian of the realm was not amused.
