Angelica Was Real! Urban Legend And The True Story Behind The Rugrats

Picture of Angelica Pickles the bully from the Rugrats cartoon on Nick.I think it’s safe to say that as one of most popular kid’s shows of all time the Rugrats cartoon was a big part of many people’s childhood.

The adventures that the Rugrats babies got into, usually at the instigation of Angelica the bully, was played every day on Nickelodeon and people loved it.

But I gotta admit that I never thought about what the story behind the Rugrats could be until I got an email the other day from a reader named Jessica G. who asked:

Do you know whether the story about the Truth Behind The Rugrats is true or not?

I’ve read a few stories but they’re pretty much the same. I don’t want to believe that it’s true because I loved the Rugrats as I was growing up. Please enlighten me.

What story could this be? I hadn’t heard anything so I set out to do some research, what I found out was pretty shocking

It turns out that there’s a huge story that’s been going around about the real kids behind the Rugrats. Or actually, the story Angelica Pickles of the Rugrats having hallucinations of the babies that she made up due to stress.says only one child, Angelica, is real and the other kids are figments of her tormented imagination.

The story is called The Rugrats Theory:

The Rugrats were really a figment of Angelica’s imagination.

Chuckie died a long time ago along with his mother, that’s why Chaz is such a nervous wreck all the time.

Tommy was stillborn and his dad Stu is in constant denial about it. So that’s why Stu is always in the basement making toys for the son who never had a chance to live.

The DeVilles had an abortion. Angelica couldn’t figure out whether it would have been a boy or a girl so she just made them twins named Phil and Lil.

The Cynthia doll that Angelica Pickles on Rugrats always carried around with her.The Rugrats Theory goes on like that, explaining things like how Angelica made her doll Cynthia look and act like her real mother, who one day just up and left the family and eventually got replaced by a very busy stepmother.

And how as she grew up she couldn’t handle all the tragedies that were happening around her so she fell deeper and deeper into her imaginary world as a way of not losing her mind. But it was already too late and she developed full blown multiple-personality disorder.

The Rugrats Theory is a pretty intense story and has become huge on Tumblr and Facebook, usually causing people who read the story to say “You’ve just ruined my childhood!” and that kind of thing.

I looked into it though and I’m happy to report that the story is an urban legend. Well…except for one thing, Angelica actually was a real girl.

Picture of Angelica holding Tommy and Chuckie from the show Rugrats on Nick.Turns out that as a kid the real Angelica used to bully a guy named Paul Germain, the person who came up with the idea for the Rugrats.

She bullied him so much that he never forgot about her and when the Rugrats show needed a character to mix things up he put her in as the villain.

Some of the other people who worked on the show weren’t happy with Angelica being so real though, they thought that she should be nicer on the show and not say things like “You dumb babies!” all the time or do stuff like throw Tommy’s ball over the backyard fence.

But the guy who was bullied by the real Angelica fought hard to keep her character on the show more realistic. He thought that kids would understand what a real bully was like and benefit from seeing the reasons behind why she might be acting like that (like her parents being too busy to pay attention to her and spoiling Picture of all the Rugrats kids together featuring Tommy and Angelica.her with toys instead).

Personally I think it’s kind of ironic that the guy who was bullied by Angelica in real life ended up fighting for her to be in the show. But I’m glad he did.

Even though she was a bully her actions were often the fuel for the the show and kept the other kids working together in their adventures. The Rugrats wouldn’t have been the same without her, don’t you think?

The Real Story Behind Hello Kitty!

A cartoon drawing of the cat Hello Kitty by Sanrio.

Hello Kitty, the iconic white cat with a red bow, dots for eyes, and absent mouth that is mysteriously cute as hell. I used to be into Hello Kitty stuff big time when I was a kid (Hello Kitty stationary and pencil boxes ftw) and still buy Hello Kitty stuff from time to time even now.

If you think about it though it’s amazing that something can be so universally popular yet the average buyer of Hello Kitty merchandise doesn’t have a clue as to what it’s about or what the story behind it is.

In some cases urban legends have stepped in to fill the void of information and you’ll find people out there saying things like the whole Hello Kitty line of toys is the work of the Devil.

Oh you didn’t know? Hello Kitty was apparently started when a mother of a child dying of cancer made a pact with the Lord Of The Underworld ™. If The Devil spared her child’s life then in return she would start a toy company that payed homage to him. Makes sense right? I mean who wouldn’t look at Hello Kitty stuff and not think ‘homage to the Devil’?

Another surprisingly depressing urban legend says that Hello Kitty was first drawn by a child of an abusive parent. According to this legend she drew the cat without a mouth because she wanted a character to confide in that couldn’t tell about the abuse and get her in trouble.

But what’s the real story behind Hello Kitty and seriously what’s up with the mouth thing?

A picture of the first Hello Kitty coin purse made by Sanrio.
Hello Kitty first came into being in the 70’s when a then new company called Sanrio needed to come up with a merchandise mascot that would appeal to the preteen girl demographic.

They commissioned an artist to work on the project and she came up with a drawing of a white Japanese Bobtail cat that had a red bow in it’s hair and was wearing blue overalls. You can see the original Hello Kitty concept on the coin purse in the picture above, which was the first Hello Kitty product ever.

A whole back story for Hello Kitty was created, which is basically this:

Hello Kitty is actually a nickname for Kitty White, who is not Japanese but actually British and lives in London with her family.

She has a twin sister named Mimmy. The only way you can tell the two apart is by their bows, Hello Kitty wears a red bow and Mimmy wears a yellow one.

She is in the third grade but when school’s out she travels the world making new friends. She is bright, kind-hearted, and loves the outdoors.

Favorite food: apple pie. Favorite word: friendship (of course). Height: five apples tall. Had enough cute yet lol?

But why doesn’t she have a mouth?

The Hello Kitty character was deliberately designed without a mouth because the lack of that visual cue makes it easier for people to project their own feelings on to the cartoon. Or as one author put it ‘the person can be happy or sad together with Hello Kitty’.

The irresistible vortex of cuteness that is Hello Kitty eventually built Sanrio a multi-billion dollar empire that includes a wide range of products and even theme parks.

Hello Kitty has developed a highly devoted following around the world, even inspiring a new word to come into existence: kitira, it means someone who is a devoted follower of Hello Kitty. Ha take that, Devil.
